The IWK hosts over 500 individual learner placements per year totaling greater than 140,000 hours of learning annually. The IWK is affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Health Professions at Dalhousie University and is the home for the departments of obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics (including pediatric subspecialties), pediatric surgery, and child and youth mental health. Learners from all health professions, including support teams, are welcome at the IWK.
Individuals wishing to complete a learner placement at the IWK must make a request, electronically in writing, to the Learning Team. Schools that have access to HSPnet, an electronic learner placement tool available within the province of Nova Scotia, are required to send their requests using that tool. Individuals who do not have access to HSPnet are required to email their request to Lisa Clements, Learning Coordinator, at firstname.lastname@example.org. The email should include information about your school/program, your preferred placement area, the dates/times of your requested placement (along with total number of hours) as well as your personal learning objectives.
Learner Placement offers are conditional on students meeting the IWK Health Centre’s pre-placement requirements (Pledge of Confidentially, Pre-Placement Health Screen, and Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search). In addition, there must be a current Letter of Agreement between the IWK and the academic institution/agency for legal and liability reasons. This would be arranged directly with the academic agency.
